Discover your child’s strengths: a guide to autism assessments

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a condition that impacts a child’s development. It affects how they think, communicate, and interact with others.

People with autism will have unique strengths and challenges. This means they need tailored support and understanding.

If you’re concerned about your child’s behaviour and development, you should seek a formal diagnosis with a paediatrician or GP.

Getting an ASD diagnosis and appropriate support early on can make a big difference in a child’s development and quality of life.

There are many treatment options available for young children.

With an ASD diagnosis, you can get a personalised treatment plan that suits your child, address concerns, build their skills and give them the confidence to tackle life.

The ASD assessment process

Our assessment team will use tests, questions and activities to assess your child’s strengths and abilities.

An assessment also includes observing your child in various environments.

Here’s what the process looks like:

asd assessments 2
  1. The process begins with a referral from a GP, paediatrician, or even you as parents.
  2. The assessment team gathers information with their tests. They’ll also review your family history and observe your child.
  3. A variety of assessment tools and checklists are used to measure your child’s strengths and challenges.
  4. A formal diagnosis is made, outlining specific details of your child’s autism spectrum disorder.

5. With a formal diagnosis, you can get a personalised support plan to unlock your child’s full potential.

6. Our therapists provide ongoing therapy and support parents to provide care at home.

It’s important to remember that autism assessments are not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Each assessment is tailored to your child’s unique needs. The support of a multidisciplinary team working together, provides a comprehensive picture on how to help your child.

Frequently asked questions

ASD assessments help us determine if a person has autism or another developmental challenge.

Assessments usually involve a variety of tests and evaluations. We look at a person’s skills, behaviours, and development, and identify areas of strength and need.

The symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can vary from person to person, but may include:

  • Difficulty with social interaction
  • Repetitive behaviours or interests
  • Communication challenges, such as delayed speech or language development
  • Sensory sensitivities to sounds, textures, or lights
  • An unusually high or low pain tolerance.
  • Difficulty with changes in routine or environment

This is a tool used to observe an individual’s social interaction skills and behaviour. This can help diagnose autism spectrum disorder or other developmental challenges.
