Pedal power: building confidence and connections through bike riding

In term 4, Ellenbrook clinic hosted a physiotherapy-led bike riding therapy group, bringing together children with a range of abilities and communication styles.

The group aimed to foster skill development, social connection, and family involvement while having lots of fun.

Group goals

The bike riding group was designed to:

  1. Teach children fundamental bike riding skills.
  2. Equip parents with practical strategies to support their children’s bike riding.
  3. Promote road safety awareness, such as navigating footpaths and understanding road rules.
  4. Encourage parallel and interactive play between children.
  5. Support social skills development, including greeting others and self-introductions.
  6. Create a fun and engaging experience for all participants.

Benefits

Some of the positive benefits included:

  • Increased confidence and independence in bike riding for children who attended.
  • Greater understanding of road safety and rules.
  • Improved skills and confidence for parents in teaching bike riding at home.
  • Boosted motivation for children and their families to practice at home.
  • Growth in social confidence and comfort participating in a group setting.
  • A warm, inclusive, and patient environment where children and families supported each other.

Parents appreciated the friendly atmosphere that encouraged participation and learning at each child’s own pace to grow their confidence.

We are so proud of everyone’s progress.

This group not only improved practical skills but also strengthened social connections and fostered a sense of community among participants.

Special mention to Charlie for being a great co-facilitator, working on your communication goals whilst supporting the other kids.

We look forward to running more programs like this in the future!
