Many people think of occupation as their “job” or their primary source of income, however occupation is much more than that… An occupation is anything with “occupies” your time, and there are many ‘jobs’ we all need to do through the day.
A child’s occupations typically include:
Where a child may be having difficulty with one or more of these roles, and Occupational Therapist looks at the skills needed to complete each task, and the areas which may be challenging.
At Early Start Australia, we focus on the foundations of ‘being’. Our sensory system is what makes each of us perfectly unique. It forms the basis for everything we do throughout the day, how calm or alert we feel, what we like or don’t like, protects us from pain and brings immense pleasure. It influences our ability to plan and be organized, concentrate, to move our bodies and to learn. It is the basis for learning, play, social skills, school work, using our hands, sports, toileting, dressing, eating and everything else we choose to do throughout the day.
Many children we see do not have a diagnosis. They may have a single area or difficulty, or be showing difficulties across a range of skill areas. Other children have a diagnosis, such as an Autism Spectrum Disorder, Developmental Delays, ADHD or a learning disorder. We also see children with Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and range of other conditions.
There is no criteria at Early Start Australia. We believe every child deserves support, encouragement, the chance to show their true potential, and a life filled with joy and laughter.
Speech pathologists study, diagnose and treat communication disorders, including difficulties with speaking, listening, understanding language, reading, writing, social skills, stuttering and using their voice.
The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is a comprehensive, evidence-based, behavioural early intervention program for children with Autism.
Developed by a trained multi-disciplinary team at the MIND Institute, ESDM integrates a relationship-focused developmental model with the well-validated practices of Applied Behaviour Analysis to provide an effective program for young children and their families.
Early Start Australia is currently delivering some ESDM services as we progress with the certification process.
Please note, this training is being supervised by a certified ESDM trainer.
We understand that sometimes cancellations and missed appointments are unavoidable – however please be mindful that a therapist has been allocated to you, and generally your appointment cannot be filled by others at short notice.
If you are unable to attend your scheduled appointment time, then please note we require two (2) business days* notice (i.e. this doesn’t include the weekend) otherwise a cancellation fee will apply. This is in line with the requirements set out by NDIS to help ensure therapy time can be fully utilised and applies to both NDIS and private clients.
If it is possible to provide you with an alternative (such as a Skype or phone session) we will make every effort to do this so that you can avoid the late cancellation fee (charged at 90% of your session time).
Alternatively, if you have an NDIS plan and we can utilise the time for approved activities outlined in your service agreement (such as liaison with teachers or other health professionals involved in your program; developing new materials and resources to support your plan; or updating your progress reports) then this non face-to-face activity can be booked against your plan instead.
You can contact the clinic by emailing us at info.NT@earlystartaustralia.com.au or calling us on 08 8932 8852.
Our reception team do not have the system capabilities to override missed appointments or waive fees – but if you have any concerns about the process please email info.NT@earlystartaustralia.com.au
*Please note our clinic operates in usual business hours. Notifications received outside business hours will be logged at 9am on the following business day.
