Assistive technology can provide practical solutions to support a child’s independence and improve their safe participation in everyday activities.

Assistive technology equipment can help children access their environment through movement, communicate more effectively and participate more fully in learning and play activities.

Assistive technology is a term used to describe a device or technical solution to support engagement in a task or activity which may not be safely or easily achieved.

Our therapists can work with you and your child to identify appropriate assistive technology that can help them achieve their goals including:

  • Mobility e.g. wheelchairs, walking frames, and sticks
  • Access e.g. IT access, modified bikes and trikes
  • Postural support e.g. standing frames, supportive seating, body splinting, and orthotics
  • Cognition e.g. task lists, picture schedules
  • Communication support e.g. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
  • SPIO suiting

How can I get more information?

Depending on your child and family’s goals and funding plan, our therapists may provide assessment and advice about suitable assistive technology.

This can be simple low-tech devices through to more specialised equipment and technology solutions.

For NDIS participants, this may be classified as low, medium and high- cost assistive technology.

Program delivery varies between clinics so check with your local clinic about their programs.

To find out more about Assistive technology equipment prescriptions or other occupational therapy services and programs available near you contact us today.

Check with your funding provider about what equipment services you may be entitled to explore.
